Blodgett : Bigleaf Maple

$ 11.00

This honey varietal derived primarily from bigleaf maple (Acer macrophyllum) nectar was harvested in early May at our Blodgett apiary. Bigleaf maple honey has strong eucalyptus, menthol, licorice, and root beer flavor notes. It is available in 8 oz (BPA-free) plastic squeeze bottles and 22 oz glass jars. The harvest date, apiary location, and primary nectar source(s) are written on the label.

Our Blodgett apiary is where we unload the bees in late March as the come back from almond pollination in California. The property is owned by local, family-owned timber company Starker Forests. The surrounding area has great early forage for honeybees, and it is a convenient stop on the way to and from dropping our kids off at nearby Blodgett Elementary School.

Bigleaf maple (Acer macrophyllum) is a common West Coast maple known for its unmistakably large leaves. It typically blooms in April but can bloom as early as March or as late as May. The trees’ flowers offer ample nectar and pollen for honeybees, but foraging during bloom time can be limited by wet weather or cool temperatures. This year, however, conditions were just right to make a huge bigleaf maple honey crop, so if you like this honey, there’s lots more.

Bigleaf maple honey has a unique menthol and/or eucalyptus flavor and aroma. This year’s bigleaf maple varietal is brighter and milder than in years past. It is one of our more controversial flavors in that a minority of folks love it, but some people would prefer to never taste it again.

We never heat our honey over natural hive temperatures, and we only filter it minimally, so it may include pollen, small wax particles, and the occasional bee bit. All natural honey will solidify eventually. To liquify, place the jar in a bowl of warm (not boiling) water. Our honeys are never flavored or infused with added ingredients. The varietal names indicate the primary nectar source plants the bees were foraging on at the time of surplus honey production.
